How to Set Up a Proxy in Telegram: MTProto and SOCKS5

Step-by-step proxy setup in Telegram: how MTProto and SOCKS5 differ, how to add server, port and secret, and which proxy to choose to bypass a block.

Updated: June 23, 2026 3 min read

Telegram is one of the few messengers with built-in proxy support. That's a lifesaver when your ISP throttles or blocks access, and it also hides your real IP. Telegram works with two proxy types: MTProto (Telegram's own protocol) and regular SOCKS5. Let's see how they differ and how to set up each in a couple of minutes.

MTProto or SOCKS5: which to choose

Bypassing blocksBetter — harder to detectWorse — visible as a proxy

If you only need to bypass a Telegram block, choose MTProto. If one proxy must work both in Telegram and in other apps, choose SOCKS5. For protocol differences in general, see "SOCKS5 or HTTP".

Setting up an MTProto proxy

The easiest way is to open a link like tg://proxy?server=...&port=...&secret=...: Telegram opens a dialog and offers to enable the proxy. Manually:

  1. Open Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy Settings.
  2. Turn on "Use Proxy" and tap "Add Proxy".
  3. Choose the MTProto type and enter the server, port and secret.
  4. Save — a checkmark and ping will appear next to the active proxy.
We keep ready-to-use MTProto servers with live ping on our free MTProto proxies for Telegram page — one-click connection, and the list is updated regularly.

Setting up a SOCKS5 proxy

  1. Open Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy Settings.
  2. Tap "Add Proxy" and choose the SOCKS5 type.
  3. Enter the data from your order: server (IP), port, login, password.
  4. Save and make sure the connection is established (a ping will appear).

The data format on purchase is usually ip:port:login:password. A general guide to setting up proxies in different apps is in "How to Set Up a Proxy".

Which proxy to get for Telegram

  • Personal account, bypassing a block — MTProto or a Russian mobile SOCKS5.
  • Multiple accounts (mailings, bots) — a separate IP per account, otherwise linking and a ban. See "Multi-Accounting Without Bans".
  • Sensitive actions — high-trust mobile proxies: how they work.

You can buy a private IP for Telegram on the proxies for Telegram page or in the general catalog.

Case study: stable Telegram under a block

A user's ISP started throttling Telegram: messages were delayed and media wouldn't load. Public MTProto servers from the internet worked for 10–15 minutes and dropped. The fix was a private MTProto/mobile SOCKS5: stable ping, instant media, and a proxy not shared with thousands of others. A separate IP was assigned for a second bot account so Telegram wouldn't link the profiles.

FAQ

Why is MTProto better than a regular proxy?

It disguises traffic as regular HTTPS, so it's harder to detect and block. But it only works in Telegram.

Are public proxies safe for Telegram?

Free public servers can see your traffic and are often overloaded. For valuable accounts, use a private proxy. Why — in "Free vs Paid Proxies".

Can I run multiple Telegram accounts through one proxy?

Not recommended: Telegram may link accounts by a shared IP. Use a separate address per account.

Where can I get proxies for Telegram?

Free MTProto on the MTProto proxies page, private IPs on the proxies for Telegram page.

Need working proxies for your task? Mobile, datacenter and residential IPs, MTProto for Telegram. Instant delivery after payment.
